Paul was the second child born to Paul M. J. and Elizabeth Alwardt Kiel, as well as the first family member born in America. His family lived in Plymouth until he was 13, subsequently moving into Sheboygan proper. Paul found work at several of the city's chair factories, at one point becoming a foreman at the Crocker Chair Company. He married Ida Koepke in 1904, and the couple were blessed with 6 children. Though a rather taciturn man, he enjoyed large family gatherings and participating in church activities at Immanuel Lutheran. Surviving his wife by 25 years, Paul passed away in 1969.
