Friedrich was born in Balsdrey, Schivelbein, Pomerania (now Bialy Zdrój, Slawoborze, Poland), the second of at least four children born to Friedrich and Gustine Berg Koepke. While still in Germany, Fred married Wilhelmine Guelzow in 1882 and had their first child, Ida. The various Koepkes, including his father and sisters, (and possibly after his mother's death) immigrated to Wisconsin between 1881 and 1888. Fred found work at the Frost Veneer Company in Sheboygan, and was subsequently employed at the Dillingham Manufacturing Company. He and his wife raised seven children, and he lived to a great age, passing away only a few months after Wilhelmine.
