OBITUARY Iron River Reporter Jan 18 1929 "Lohrey Victim of First 1929 Mine Fatality: Car Runs Wild, Plunges Through Shaft House, Drops 35 Feet"
Walter Lohrey, 24, employed as landor at the Baltic mine in Caspian, was killed instantly at 3:15 Thursday afternoon when the motor car he was handling failed to come to a stop and crashed through the slant house, falling 35 feet to the surface.
Lohrey was pinned beneath the car and so badly crushed about the head and chest that he died quickly without regaining consciousness.
Arthur Scott, surface foreman, witnessed the accident and was the first to reach Lohrey. A derrick was required to lift the four-ton car from the victim's body.
Coroner W.J. Johns, who was called, prounced the case an accident and said no necessity existed for an inquest.
Lohrey was engaged in operating a motorcar running from the shaft house along the trestle to the stockpile dump. Returning from a trip, his car either became unmanageable or he lost control, sending it crashing into the shaft house from where it fell below. Lohrey had no opportunity to leap to safety and was carried along with the heavy car.
He had been an employee of the Verona Mining Co. at intervals since 1922 and took up a job at the Baltic when the mine opened this fall.
He was born in Iron River on August 9, 1904 but for many years has been a resident of Caspian. He was unmarried.
