Motor racing driver. Edgar Barth was born in Herold-Ergeberge, East Germany, and later became a DKW motorcycle racer. He progressed to EMW sportscars before moving from East to West Germany, where in 1959, 1963 and 1964 he won the European Hillclimb Championships for Porsche and the prestigious 1959 Targa Florio. He entered five grand prix, four being the German GPs, firstly racing a factory Porsche F2 car, and finally in 1964 a Cooper-Climax. Nine months later, he died of cancer at Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart. His son Jurgen Barth also became a works Porsche sportscar racer wiining the 1977 Le Mans 24hr race with Jackie Ickx and Hurley Haywood.
