Philipp LEDERER was born in Rommelshausen, Oberamt Cannstatt, Wuerttemberg [today Kernen-Rommelshausen, Rems-Murr-Kreis - abt. 8 miles east of Stuttgart] on July 15, 1874. On August 2, 1874, he was christened at St. Mauritius Lutheran Church (Ev. Mauritiuskirche).

Together with his parents [Johann Georg and Brigitte Barbara LEDERER (née LEDERER)], three sisters and three brothers he left Rommelshausen on May 15, 1881. In Bremen, the family boarded the 'S.S. Ohio' and arrived in New York (Castle Garden) on June 7, 1881.

Only one year later, in May 1882, the parents returned to Germany with their three youngest children (Emma, Philipp and Johann Gottlob). Martha, Johann's and Barbara's last child, was born in Rommelshausen on November 11, 1882. Johann Georg LEDERER died in Rommelshausen only six years later, on February 19, 1889 and was buried in the village cemetery.

After his death, his widow and the four remaining children came back to the U.S. to join the rest of the family. They arrived in New York on board the 'S.S. Weser' from Bremen on May 24, 1889 - final destination Baltimore. In the passenger list only the names of Barbara, Philipp and Gottlob can clearly be read (passengers no. 546 to 548). The entries for Emma and Martha (passengers no. 549 and 550) are missing because the lines for them are damaged in the original document.

Philipp became a baker and worked for various bakeries in Washington, D.C.

In 1927 he made a last visit to Germany together with his brother Johann Gottlob ("John G.") and widowed sister Marie SPECKMANN (née LEDERER). Their return voyage to America is documented in the passenger list of the "S.S. Stuttgart" (sailing from Bremen September 24, 1927 and arriving in New York October 4, 1927).

He passed away at his residence, 1222 Franklin St NE (Brookland), on January 20, 1939. Interment at Glenwood Cemetery on January 23, 1939.
