He was a lawyer, husband, and the father of one son and daughter.
He was the son of William Nesbit and Elizabeth Jane McConkey Nesbit.
Grandson of William Nesbit and Rosanna Hamilton Nesbit.
Great-grandson of James Hamilton and Jane Boyd Hamilton of Tyrone, N. Ireland.
Letter from Martha J. Ferguson (1898), page 4, discussing ancestors and various Hamilton, Boyd and Weir relatives, referred to one of her cousins, "Winfield Scott Nesbit, a lawyer at the Allegheny Co. bar, who died a short time ago."

He died at age 40 in January 1896, but conflicting dates of death appear in different sources for various reasons. Evelyn Nesbit wrote that she was eight years old when her father died, which would be 1892 if she were giving her correct age. A syndicated news story in 1907 said he died 1898 (Ft. Worth Star Telegram, Feb. 27, 1907, p.13). As a biographer stated, her 11th birthday had been celebrated just three weeks before her father's death.

Bloomington (Indiana) DAILY LEADER, Jan. 22, 1896, p. 3:
WHEELED HIMSELF TO DEATH.
Alleghany Lawyer Brought on Spinal Meningitis by Cycling.
W.S. Nesbit, a member of the Alleghany county bar, died the other day from an attack of spinal meningitis. He was 40 years old, and one of the most enthusiastic wheelmen in the country. He was one of the organizers of the Pittsburg Century club and secured the charter for that association. His doctor told him several weeks ago, when he was attacked, it was the result of too much cycling, against which Mr. Nesbit had been frequently warned. He had paid no attention to the warnings and continued ‘scorching,’ with his back bent over the handle bar. More than one physician told him he would contract a disease of the spine.
“Had Mr. Nesbit not bent over his machine when riding, it is asserted, he would not have contracted the disease.”
