Zara Schmelen, first wife of the Rhenish missionary Reverend Johann Schmelen, was of the Nama tribe and was probably from Steinkopf. She was instrumental in the translation of the Gospels into Nama. She died on the way back from Cape Town after proofing the final draft of the translations. This cenotaph was installed in 2013 to honor her and her achievements.
