He was born Dirk Leickering in January 1864 in the city of Workum, located in the southwestern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, son of the 31 years old grocery hand (gruttersknecht) Egbert Dirks Leickering and Lokke Roodbergen, 29 years old.

Dirk Leickering had the following siblings:
* Cornelia Egberts Leickering, b. 22 May 1861, Workum, d. 27 jul 1949, Hallum;
* Haite Egberts Leickering, b. 15 Oct 1866, Oldeboorn, d. 2 Sep 1927, Hallum;
* Romke Egberts Leickering, b. 16 Apr 1872, Hallum, d. 26 Mar 1880, Hallum.

On Saturday November 5, 1904 laborer Dirk Leickering, living in Hallum, married in Ferwerd, the seat of the municipality Ferwerderadeel, at the age of 40 years the seven years younger Gerritje Hoot, born in the country village of Hallum, located in the northern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, daughter of late Lieuwe Jurjens Hoot and Antje Hendriks de Jong. Dirk Leickering recognized at the marriage Hendrik Hoot as his son, who was born on May 31, 1896 in Hallum to the 25 years old and unmarried housekeeper Gerritje Hoot.

On November 28, 1904 Dirk Leichering (40 years old, laborer), [his wife] G. Leichering (33, laborer) and [their son] H[endrik] Leichering (8 months, must be: 8 years) arrived on the SS Statendam at the port of New York, Ellis Island. Their last residence place was Hallum and their destination was Chicago, where his brother-in-law H. Koots (has to be: H[endrik] Hoot aka H[enry] Hoort) was living.

In April 1910 Dirk E Leichening (46 years old, born in Holland, immigrated in 1904, farmer), his wife Gertrude L (39, Holland, immigrated in 1904), their children Jessie D Leichening (16, Holland, immigrated in 1898 and Henry D Leichening (14, Holland, immigrated in 1904, farm laborer) were living on a rented farm in Ward 12 of -west- Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. They had three boarders, Herman R Looyenga (4, Holland), Peter Postma (30, Holland, immigrated in 1905) and John J Dykstra (24, Holland). Peter Postma married later on to his stepdaughter Tjitske Hoot aka Jessie Leichering.

In February 1920 Dick Leichering (53, herdsman) and Gertrude Leichering (49, boarder) were living in Shields Township, located about 40 miles north of Chicago, Lake County, Illinois, at the home of Paul H Zsitz (40, Germany, farmer), his wife and four children.

On 1 March 1929 Dick Leichering, born on 5 January 1864 in Friesland, Holland, farmer, died at the age 65 years in Downers Grove, DuPage County, Illinois. He was buried in Forest Home Cemetery in Forest Park, Cook County, Illinois.
In 1956 his widow Gertrude died at the age of about 85 years in the city of Elgin, located in the northern part of Illinois and 35 miles (56 km) northwest of Chicago.

In 1947 there were only 4 persons residing in the Netherlands with the surname Leickering, all living in the northern province Friesland.
