John Koegel Found Dead

John Koegel, 72, of Camillus Ave., Warners RD 1, was found dead at his home last night, sheriff’s deputies said.

Koegel, Sheriff’s Detective James Wolf said, died from a 12-gauge shotgun wound.

The dead man was found in the kitchen of this home about 9 p.m. by this wife, Ann, who had been visiting neighbors. Investigating were Dep. Guy Treglia and Asst. Dist. Atty. Patrick J. Cunningham.

Dr. Martin F. Hilfinger Jr., county medical examiner, withheld a verdict pending autopsy.

Death Ruled As Suicide

Dr. Martin F. Hilfinger Jr., county medical examiner, ruled last night that John J. Koegel, 72, of Camillus Ave., Warners RD 1, died Saturday night from a cerebral laceration and hemorrhage as a result of a shotgun wound to his head.

The medical examiner issued a verdict of death by suicide after an autopsy yesterday morning.

Koegel, a retired laborer, was found in the kitchen of his home about 9 p.m. Saturday by his wife, Anna, who had been visiting neighbors. He had been in ill health the last year.

Sheriff’s detective James Wolf said that Koegel had a 12-gauge shotgun wound. Asst. Dist. Atty. Patrick J. Cunningham and Deputy Guy Treglia investigated.

A native of Syracuse, Koegel had lived in the town of Camillus 40 years and was a veteran of World War I.

Surviving besides his wife are two sisters, Miss Anna Koegel and Miss Catherine Koegel; three brothers, Anthony, Joseph and Frederick Koegel, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Edward J. Ryan Funeral Home, 1628 W. Genesee St., and at 9 a.m. in St. Cecelia’s Church where a high Mass of requiem will be celebrated. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.
