Sioux Falls, SD ~ Howard "Howie" Dean Pfaff, age 79, died on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Graveside services with Military Honors will begin at 9:45 AM Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls followed by a memorial service to begin at 11:00 AM at First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM on Friday at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls with the family present to greet friends from 6 to 8 PM. Howard Dean Pfaff was born on March 10, 1935 in Huntley, Wyoming to Calvin and Anna (Herdt) Pfaff. Howie was raised and received his education in Torrington, WY. Following high school Howie enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Chief Boiler Technician on many Navy Vessels in Vietnam and later training new recruits. He was honorably discharged in 1973.

Howie was united in marriage with Edith "Edie" Vander Vegte on October 21, 1961 in Bellflower, California. The couple was blessed with three children and while in the service the family lived in California, Rhode Island, Illinois and Iowa before making their home in South Dakota in 1974 first in Lennox and then Sioux Falls in 1983. Howie was an expert in boilers; and worked as a boiler inspector and educator until his retirement in 2012. He was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Falls; the VFW, Fleet Reserve Association and the American Legion. Howie loved life and had a great sense of humor. He had a passion for fishing and enjoyed hunting, camping, traveling, golfing, spending time in nature, watching the Minnesota Vikings and Twins, and collecting model steam engines and tractors. Above all he loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed.Howie is preceded in death by his parents, Calvin & Anna Pfaff; infant son, David; three brothers, Almont, Eddie and Donald Pfaff; and one sister, Delores Eisenbarth.
