Thurleen Louise (Schnepel) Hotze, 85

April 1, 1929 ~ January 18, 2015

Thurleen was born on April 1, 1929 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluff, Iowa, to Otto Henry William and Anna Lydia (Braack) Schnepel.

She was baptized into the Lutheran Church in May, 1929 at the church located on the site of the current St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, near Treynor, Iowa, where she would later be buried. In 1942, she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

Thurleen attended a country school, Pleasant Valley #1, in Silver Creek Township through the eighth grade. After graduation in 1946 from Treynor High School, she attended Central College in Pella, Iowa, where she earned an associate teaching degree in 1948.

Thurleen taught for one year in Stuart, Iowa, and two years in Oakland, Iowa.

Marion Lewis Hotze and Thurleen were married November 18, 1950, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Treynor. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Ward Stephen in 1952; Sarah Ann in 1954; and Brenda Joy in 1964.

Thurleen and Marion were farmers, and lived and worked on the family farm for 25 years. They began their retirement in 1975 with a move to Treynor, where they built their new dream home.

Thurleen was a busy mother and homemaker. She was a long time member and active volunteer at St. Paul Lutheran Church, serving in the Wedded Band and the Missionettes Circle, as well as volunteering for the local Meals on Wheels.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew and loved her.

Following the death of Marion in February 19, 2002, Thurleen continued to live in her Treynor home. As Altzheimer's and mixed vascular dementia began to take a toll, Thurleen moved to the Memory Care Unit at Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in February, 2012.

In June 2013, Thurleen moved to Silver Memories, Inc. in Omaha, Nebraska and passed away there on January 18, 2015, at the age of 85 years, 9 months, and 17 days. In addition to her beloved husband Marion, she was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister-in-law, Doris Hotze Sturgill.

Left with memories are her children, Brenda (Kevin) Sherman of Springfield, NE; Sarah (Larry) Plagman of Carson, Iowa, and Ward (Cindy) Hotze of Ramona, CA; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.

The funeral was at 7 pm Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015, at Loess Hills Funeral Home, Carson, Iowa. Reverend Michael Harvey conducted the service and offered words of comfort. Anna Davis was the pianist, and Gred Davis the vocalist, who sang "I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry". The congregation sang "Take Thou My Hand, O Father". Registry attendants were Susan Sherman, Colleen Sherman and Laura Sherman. Private interment was held at St. Paul Lutheran Cemtery, Treynor, Iowa.

The following poem was printed in the funeral leaflet:
An Alzheimer's Poem
Do not ask me to remember.
Don't try to make me understand.
Let me rest and know you're with me.
Kiss my cheek and hold my hand.
I'm confused beyond your concept.
I am sad and sick and lost.
All I know is that I need you to be
With me at all cost.
Do not lose patience with me.
Do not scold or curse or cry.
I can't help the way I'm acting,
Can't be different though I try.
Just remember that I need you,
That the best of me is gone.
Please don't fail to stand beside me,
Love me 'til my life is done.
