Evelyn D. Martens, 84, of Sheldon passed away Monday, June 21, 2004, at Northwest Iowa Health Center -- Senior Care in Sheldon.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. Ken Riedemann officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., a Scripture wake service at 7 p.m. and a St. Patrick's Ladies Guild rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Evelyn D. Martens was born April 1, 1920, near Sutherland, Iowa, the daughter of Nicholas C. "Nick" and Vallata (Weiss) Betz. She was raised and educated in O'Brien County, Iowa.

On Aug. 18, 1947, she was united in marriage to Walter A.J. Martens in Sanborn, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm near Ashton, Iowa, where they farmed for 34 years. They retired in 1981 and moved into Sheldon. Her husband preceded her in death on July 25, 1984, in Sheldon.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Ladies Guild and Missionary. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, reading and watching game shows. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She leaves to cherish her memory four sons and their wives, John and Evelyn Martens of Carrolton, Texas, Stanley and Barbara Martens of Westminster, Colo., Philip and Patricia Martens of Buhl, Idaho, and Joseph and Hazel Martens of Sheldon; a daughter and her husband, Lila and Charles Kummerfeld of Sutherland, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, Marisa and Megan Martens, Annie and Katie Martens, Danielle Martens, Travis and Bruce Martens, Angela Burmeister, Eve Hipkins and Mary, Dee and Walter Kummerfeld; three great-grandchildren, Claire Hipkins, Patrick Martens and Shakota Burmeister; two sisters, Maybelle Riedemann of Little Falls, Minn., and Eilene Benz of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother, Dick Betz of Spencer, Iowa; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Arlene Krueger and Dora Hilbert; and a brother, Robert Betz.
