Alfred was born the ninth child of 10 to Albert Ernest and Dorthea “Dora” (Ludeman) Nagel, who were both from Germany. The family lived near Sheffield prior to moving to South Haven, Mich., in 1938.
Alfred moved back to Sheffield for a time and then enlisted in the Army to serve his country. He honorably served from 1942 until 1945. He received his basic training and then transferred to Fort Warren in Cheyenne, Wyo. He received training in welding, blacksmithing, acetylene torches and electrical work at Camp Normal in San Antonio, Texas.
He served overseas at Baghdad, Iraq, maintaining equipment for the troops moving through the area. He received a medal in marksmanship and was still thankful for his keen eyesight up to the end of his days.
On March 14, 1950, he was united in marriage to Ruth M. Martin from the Rockford area. They returned to the Little Brown Church in Nashua, where they were married to celebrate their 50th anniversary. To their union two daughters were born.
Alfred had a diverse working career, starting out with manufacturing and farming. He owned land in the Sheffield area and continued with farming and a variety of jobs, including construction, welding and carpentry. The family moved to the Rockwell area where he continued to farm and work in the Mason City area.
His hobbies included going to farm sales, fishing and crossword puzzles. He had a passion for playing cribbage and entering tournaments.
Alfred was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, the VFW and Gallagher Post No. 208 of the American Legion.
