John was born June 18, 1912 to Martin and Aurelia (Brandt) Osterman in Walls Township, Wheaton. He was baptized in Parnell Lutheran Church in August of 1912 and confirmed in August 1930 in the Lutheran church in Dumont. John grew up on the family farm and attended grade school in District 6.
He served on many church and township boards. His hobbies were fishing and spending time with relatives and friends.
On September 24, 1939 he married Clara Lubben at St. John's Lutheran Church in Dumont. The couple farmed for three years in Walls Township near Wheaton, then for five years south of Dumont, until on December 24, 1946 they purchased their home 10 miles southeast of Wheaton. Many good years were spent there on the farm.
In 1977 the couple bought a home by Lake Victoria near Alexandria where John was able to enjoy his hobby of fishing. John and Clara joined Zion Lutheran Church. In 1992 they moved to a town home where they continued to live to the present.
John is survived by his wife, Clara; brother, Marvin (Ruth) Osterman of Montevideo; sister, Julia Jacobs of Wheaton; sister-in-law, Jean Osterman of Wheaton.
He was preceded in death by is parents; sister, Evelyn, and brother, Lyle.
A funeral service was held October 5 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria with Rev. Terry Finnern and Rev. William Moeller officiating. Interment was at Kinkead Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ervin Simpson, Darrell Zimmerman, Roy Martell, Willard Ommen, Jack Bell and Maynard Alsleben. Services directed by Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
