An Obergefreiter and Bordfunker [wireless operartor] with Stab Erprobungsgruppe 210, he died during a mission to attack Croydon aerodrome, when his aircraft (Bf 110D-0; wn:3338; S9+AB) was shot down by a Hurricane of 111 Squadron RAF, piloted by John Marlow Thompson, and crashed at Catt's Hill near Rotherfield, Sussex. The Flugzeugführer [pilot] Hauptmann Walter Rubensdörffer also died in the crash.
