He worked for many years at Sturgis Iron and Metal in South Bend as a highly skilled crane mechanic. Chris was an enthusiastic sportsman, playing hockey in school and later, under the nom de guerre, "Cyrus," was an active member of the Splatmandu Paintball Club in Three Rivers MI. He was also an amateur expert in electronics, devising high-tech computer and entertainment systems at his home and for friends. More recently he was an avid online gamer, making friends around the world. He was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame football.
Chris suffered a diving accident in 2004 which rendered him quadriplegic. He moved to Greensboro in 2007 to be closer to his parents, and lived at the Heartland Rehabilitation Center there. He is survived by his mother, Thelma Hessling of Greensboro; and siblings, Peter Hessling and wife, Janet of Durham, NC, Paul Hessling and wife, Janice of Greensboro, Anthony Hessling of South Bend, Alexandra Hessling of Indianapolis and Victoria Hessling of Greensboro. He also leaves a multitude of friends throughout the Michiana area who remember him fondly. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, August 7th, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Greensboro, with interment at the St. Pius X Columbarium. Arrangements are by Forbis & Dick Funeral Services. Condolences may be sent to Thelma Hessling, 3406 Overton Drive, Greensboro, NC 27408.
