First African American actor to be nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his performance in "The Reivers"(1969). Born in New York City, Rupert studied at the Actor's Studio under John Cassavetes. He married the daughter of singer Cab Calloway, Chris Calloway, in 1970.

Crosse made numerous guest appearances on television before landing a role in "The Reivers", directed by and starring Actor's Studio members Mark Rydell and Steve McQueen. His last onscreen role was in the sitcom "The Partners", alongside Don Adams. Shortly before his death, Crosse was cast as Mulhall in "The Last Detail" (1973), by his friend Jack Nicholson, but backed out after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
