His obituary in The Mount Forest Confederate on 28 March 1940 reads as follows: "Nicholas Schmidt Dead - Nicholas Schmidt, a former Arthur Township resident died at his home in Kitchener on March 13, aged 83 years. His death resulted from a stroke sustained a few days previous. His funeral took place in Kitchener on Saturday. The late Mr. Schmidt was born in Trenton in 1856, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Basil Schmidt. When young he came to Arthur Township with his family where much of his life was spent. For many years he had resided in Kitchener. His wife, Aphonsine Fischer, died twenty years ago. Surviving are four sons, Emil, New Hamburg; Edward of Timmins; Thomas and Raymond of Kitchener, and five daughters, Anna, Clara, Mrs. Collins of Kitchener, Mrs. Selke, Toronto and Sister St. Pius of St. Joseph's Convent, Brantford; two brothers, James of Kenilworth and Andrew of Toledo."
