John Bernard Dahlmann gt. Deiterman was born in Nienberge, Westphalen, Prussia, Germany.

John Dahlmann came to America in 1854, after securing a "certificate of release" on March 21, 1854, claiming assets of $200. Looks like he MAY HAVE gone to New York first before sailing to Galveston, as family stories tell it.

After his birth in Nienberge he moved to Nottuln; the distance is about 20 kilometers between Nienberge and Nottuln. [gt. is an abreviation for gennant which means called - The children, who did not inherit the farmstead, married into other families and took over the names of those families, i.e. the names of the farmsteads. This was true for women and for men. The traditional name of the farmstead was most likely Deiterman; but John was born as Große Dahlmann.]

John served in the Prussian army for 3 years. He was drafted when he was 18 -21 years old and had to serve in the army for 3 years. After that he had to join the "Kriegsreserve" for 2 years and for 6 years the "Landwehr 1. Aufgebot". When he belonged to the Landwehr at the age of 27 he was allowed to emigrate.

John's father was Wilhelm Heinrich Luetke Dahlmann b 29 Jan 1786 Altenberge, Westphalia, Germany, d 07 Apr 1832 Nienberge, Westphalen, Prussia, Germany.

John's mother was Anna Maria Gertrud Encking b 14 Dec 1800 Nienberge, Westphalen, Germany d 29 Sep 1879 Westphalen, Germany.

John's parents married on 13 Jul 1819 at Liebfrauen-Uberwasser Katholisch Kirche, Munster Stadt, Westfalen, Prussia.

John had two brothers and three sisters.

After the death of Wilhelm Heinrich Luetke Dahlmann (John's father), Anna Maria Gertrud Encking married Christoph Bernard Sessendrup gt. Deiterman on 18 Jun 1833 at Nienberge, Westphalen, Germany.

John had one half sister (Elisabeth) and four half brothers.

We believe that the half brother, Johann Everhard Sessendrup gt. Deiterman, is Edward, the half brother that emigrated with John in 1854. Edward had not served his military duty and we have not yet found any emigration records for him. It's possible he left without permission, since he had not served in the military.

John married Josephine Anna Hatke on February 4, 1868 at St. Francis Church of Assisi, Teutopolis, Effingham County, Illinois.

The attached photo is taken from a charcoal drawing and is the only known picture of John Bernard Dahlmann Deiterman. The charcoal drawing is in the possession of Andrea (Berger) Walston. It was rescued from a chicken coop on the farm of Louisa "Lou"(Detterman) Cox.

John Bernard Dahlmann Deiterman died between January 1, 1884 and March 19, 1884 at Tours, McLennan County, Texas.
Since payments were made by Josephine Deiterman on the account of John Deiterman (deceased), on the property purchased in Tours, Texas, John must have died prior to March 19, 1884. Josephine (Hatke) Deiterman, always told her granddaughter, Josephine Detterman Berger that John died when Martin Joseph was only 4 years old. Martin would have turned 4 on February 10, 1884, so we can assume that John died between February 10, 1884 and March 19, 1884.

Inscription

The tombstone on John Bernard Dahlmann Deiterman's grave has his name spelled Detterman, however John never spelled his name that way. His wife, Josephine, changed the spelling to Detterman in about 1905. (I believe this tombstone was placed on the grave in the 1990s.) The original marker was a 3' metal cross with no inscription.
