Ruth E. Hompland Olson passed away peacefully at her home in Monmouth on Friday, August 7, 2015 at 5:29 am. She was tireless in spirit, and lived her life with faith, courage, dignity, and a sense of humor. Ruth Evangeline Hompland was born August 10, 1920, in Kuling, China. Her parents, Anna and Reverend Lars Hompland, were American missionaries, and Ruth lived with her family in China until she was seventeen years of age. She then returned to the United States, and completed her education. She was a graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and later married Guy C. Olson on December 27, 1941. Ruth and her husband settled in Bode, Iowa, a small farming community. The had three children, Miriam, James, and Craig. The family moved to Monmouth in 1959. Mrs. Olson cherished her family and friends, and was very active in the Monmouth community. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, and very involved in the Monmouth community schools, Community Memorial Hospital, the YMCA, Chapter LE of PEO, and many fundraising projects. Her membership in the Monmouth Country Club afforded her the opportunity to become a part of various activities, as well as winning several golf tournaments. Ruth was, with her daughter, Miriam, and Dan Burgland of Monmouth, instrumental in the creation and success of The Field of Dreams, comprised of James and Craig Fields, in memory of her two sons. Ruth was an inspiration to all of us. She was accomplished, creative, and her interests were extensive. Ruth is survived by her daughter Miriam, son-in-law Carson Skaggs, three grandchildren, Jason and his wife Lisa, Ryen and Zachary, and three great-grandchildren Jacob, Kaitlyn, and Sarah. She is also survived by two older sisters, and by Carolyn Butler and Sara Carrasque, who gave unwavering love and dedication to Ruth, by Huey Stegall, and "Ruthie's Girls", who provided such wonderful home care. The family also wishes to sincerely thank each and every one of them. The family also wishes to acknowledge Helen and Dr. James Paul, John and Mary Twomey, Mrs. Olson was preceded in death by her husband Guy, and her sons, James and Craig.

Services: A private graveside memorial service is planned at Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of arrangements. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Field of Dreams, in care of Dan Burgland at 329 North C Street, Monmouth, Illinois 61462 or left at the funeral home.
