Herman Erickson was killed in the disaster at Winter Quarters, a coal mine. 200 men died in this explosion. Many were killed by lingering toxic gases called after damp at the time. It was one of a coal miners worst fears. Those fears lived out here at Scofield. The workings were over a mile horizantally underground and almost 1 1/2 miles in some areas. Once the mine filled with gas there was no escape.
