Ipswich - The funeral service for Erna Bastian, 92, of Ipswich will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Ipswich United Church of Christ - Congregational Church with Rev. Dave Biebighauser leading the worship service. Burial will follow at Ipswich City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Gramm Funeral Home in Ipswich and one hour prior to the service at the church. Erna was born Jan. 31, 1914, to Ernest and Maria (Habeck) Vietzke at Nassau, Minn. She attended rural school at District 107 in Minnesota. In 1929, she moved with her parents to Ipswich, S.D., where they lived on a farm. She married Andreas "Andy" Bastian on Nov. 4, 1936, at Aberdeen, S.D. They farmed together and raised their family in Union Township. They retired from farming in 1973 and moved into Ipswich in 1978. Andy died Dec. 28, 2002. Erna was a member of The Ipswich United Church of Christ and the Ladies Fellowship. Playing cards was her favorite pastime. She loved to crochet and make quilts to share with her friends and family and spending time gardening. Erna died Friday, July 28, 2006, at Beverly Healthcare in Ipswich. She is survived by her three children, Gerald (Marlys) Bastian of Mankato, Minn., Vernon (Jeanne) Bastian of Worthington, Minn., and Ilene (Glen) Sorensen of Arco, Minn.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Elsie Current of Wyoming, Iowa. Her parents, husband, three brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.
