Bilagaana (“white man”) Anson Damon was the son of Isaiah Damon (1806 Maine - 1879 Maine) & Mary R Bridges (1807 Maine - 1868 Maine). His line is the "Damon of Scituate" which first settled in America with John Damon & Katherine Merritt, emigrating to Plymouth from Kent, England (1628-1633). [Pane-Joyce Genealogy & Richard A. Damon Jr "Scituate Family of Damons."] His grandfather, Private Abiah Damon, (DAR # A029445) served Massachusetts in the American Revolution.

Anson lived at a remarkable time and place in our history. Born in the northeast US to English lineage, he settled in the newly emerged Navajo Nation as a cavalry soldier, a "sutler," and one of the first Indian traders in the southeast US. (Following "The Long Walk" of the Native Americans Anson was assigned from his unit in California to Fort Sumner, a military fort charged with the internment of nearby Navajo and Mescalero Apache populations from 1863 to 1868. The federal government closed the fort in 1868.)

According to California Civil War Rosters, “Records of California Men in the War of the Rebellion, 1861 to 1867” by Brig.-Gen. Richard H. Orton, pub. 1890, Anson C. Damon enlisted and was a Corporal in the First Regiment (Dutch Flat, Placer, CA) Cavalry, Company G. His regiment was sent to Fort Sumner, New Mexico from May 25, 1863 - June 12, 1863, mustering out May 27, 1866.

Anson married a Navajo woman in 1866 and returned with her to her reservation in 1868, setting up a trading post in Ft. Defiance and running a livestock / ranching business. His wife is referred to by several names per Census records: Tadeezbaa', Mary, Estsan, and Belah. She was of the Hashtl´ishnii (Mud) clan. There is dispute whether he married her or married additional wives, per Navajo tradition. But, this wife is the same age at each census and had 9 out of 12 children living (Census). (Addendum 2016 - The 1910 Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache, Arizona Census lists wife a Belah Damon and having been m. to Anson for 42 years.)

The "squaw men" about whom the Army complained so violently when, finally, the Navahos rose against him (sic), were such notable figures in Navaho trading as Thomas and William Keam, Anson Damon, and Daniel DuBois, all married to Navaho women and all, with good reason, deemed more trustworthy by the Navahos than the Government´s agent. (The Indian Traders. Frank McNitt)

Through his sons, James Madison Damon (Lowell Smith Damon, one of the Original 29) and Charles Sumner Damon (Anson Chandler Damon, Jr.), Anson was the grandfather of two of World War II's "Code Talkers." Many of his progeny are found today in the Navajo Nation.

All "Damon of Scituate" descendants may be proud to know that they are related to the many Damon Native American Indians through Anson.

They seemed to have named all of their children after politically /historically famous Americans.

Better search results are found when using "Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache, Arizona" as the place of the Census. Once found, some of the Census require a Native American to translate because of the naming patterns. Please send your email address if you would like an Invitation to my Ancestry database.
