Herbert "Herb" N. Garrou, 83, of Valdese passed away September 5, 2015 following a brief illness. He was a loving husband and caring father who will be dearly missed. He was born in Morganton, February 1, 1932 to William E. Sr. and Belle Hildebrand Garrou. He is survived by his wife of sixty one years, Betty Bumgarner Garrou and children, Susan Black (Tony), Katherine Garrou, Barbara Jaunais (Ken), William Garrou (Brooke); grandchildren, Nathan Black (Dana), Chelsea Benson (Thomas), Cameron Black, Kristina Jaunais, Rebecca Jaunais, Alex Garrou, and Meghan Garrou; three great granddaughters; and one sister Jeannine Garrou. Many extended family also survive.
Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers William E. Jr. "Buzz" Garrou and John Garrou.
Herb attended NC State University, Lees McRae College and spent time in Montana and California working with the Park and Forestry Services prior to serving in the Army with time spent in Korea. He was employed by General Electric and worked as a Valdese mail carrier before retiring from the Town of Valdese. He was a Mason, a retired volunteer fireman, and a member of the LPDA. He was a lifelong member of the Waldensian Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon.
The family will receive friends Tuesday September 8, 2015 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Service.
Interment will be held at the Waldensian Presbyterian Cemetery Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 10:00 AM.
A memorial service for Mr. Garrou will follow at 11:00 AM Wednesday at the Waldensian Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jim Cockerham officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to the Christian Assistance Ministry at Waldensian Presbyterian Church, or to Grandfather Home for Children, or to the charity of your choice.
