Carol Keller Collins, 64, a former first lady of the city of Athens, died at home Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, surrounded by family members. She was born Jan. 24, 1951, in Scottsboro to Steve and Louise Keller.
She was preceded in death by her father, Steve Keller; and her stepfather, S.B. Manning.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Lakin Collins; her mother, Louise Berry Manning of Scottsboro; two sons, Brad Collins and wife Cherry of Athens, and Will Collins and wife Sonja of St. Marys, Georgia; five grandchildren, Arden, Whitby and Asher Collins of Athens and Nathan and Nicholas Collins of St. Marys; a sister, Jean Staehr and husband Tom of Lynden, Washington; and two brothers, J.J. Keller of Scottsboro and Steve Keller and wife Darlene of Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
Carol graduated from Florence State University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology. She taught science at Athens Middle School for 11 years and was instrumental in developing and organizing the Dauphin Island Sea Lab educational trips for Athens Middle School students. Carol continued her education in computer science at Athens State College and the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Although she loved teaching, she chose a career change and worked for Intergraph as a programmer and, later, for TVA Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant in information technology. The last 25 years, she had been employed by Boeing at Marshall Space Flight Center, where she worked as a programmer, software engineer and manager on Space Shuttle payload support and environmental controls for the International Space Station.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Roselawn Cemetery, with John Gibson officiating.
Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Spry Funeral Home in Athens.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Binod Bista, Dr. Lyn Boyer, Pam Gaston, the nurses and staff of Athens-Limestone Hospital, the staff of Limestone Health Facility Senior Rehabilitation, the nurses and therapists of Athens-Limestone Home Health, nurse Chrissie Scroggins, and the caring, compassionate staff of Hospice of Limestone County.
