Velma Wittrock, 99 of Oceanside,
CA, formerly of Paullina, IA, died
January 20, 2002, at her residence.
Memorial services were held January
25 at Eternal Hills Chapel in
Oceanside with Rev. Donald Miller
officiating. Burial was in Eternal
Hills Cemetery.

Velma Dorothea Wittrock was
born February 22, 1902, near Paullina,
IA, the daughter of Henry and
Minnie (Appledorn) Orthmann. She
attended country school at Grant #4
north of Sutherland, IA. She graduated
from Sutherland High School,
attended Teachers Training School in
Sheldon, and taught school at Grant
#4. Her children, nieces and nephews
also attended Grant #4.

On January 17, 1924, she was
united in marriage to Harry Wittrock
in her parents home, Sutherland.
Two daughters, Arlys and Darlene,
were born to them.

The couple farmed north of Sutherland
for 30 years, then moved to
Paullina where they farmed 20 years.
They retired to Oceanside, CA where
they tended an avocado grove. Harry
died June 5, 1998.

Velma was a member of the Ladies
Aide Society, Covey Church, for
many years. She taught Sunday
School at the Sutherland Methodist
Church and was a member of the
Presbyterian Church in Paullina. Her
most precious attribute was making
her home welcome to everyone.
Many relatives and friends were
guests and entertained in their home
in Oceanside. She enjoyed music
and played the organ and piano.

Her grandchildren were very special to
her. "Grandma Velma" especially
enjoyed her great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughters
and husbands, [redacted]; two
brothers, Herman Orthmann and
Edwin Orthmann, Sutherland; five
grandchildren, [redacted];
seven greatgrandchildren,
[redacted]; one brother-in-law, Ed
Wittrock, Hartley, and many nieces
and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her
husband, a brother Delbert, and two
sisters-in-law.
