Christin was born in Neusatz, Grossliebenthal, Odessa, S. Russia (Ukraine) to Christian and Margaretha (Bauer) Neumiller. She came to America with her parents and siblings in 1889 settling in South Dakota.
She married Fred Hertel 25 July 1889 in Eureka, McPherson, South Dakota. The couple made their home on a farm five miles west of Eureka until 1895 when they moved to a farm southeast of Hosmer. After 18 years residence in Hosmer they moved to a farm 11 miles northeast of McLaughlin where they lived until Mr. Hertel's retirement in 1937, when they moved into McLaughlin. After her husband's death in 1943 she then resided with her daughter.
