William Albert Balster was born August 8, 1912, on a farm in Iona Twsp., Murray County, Minnesota to Joseph and Engelina Schoo Balster. He grew up on the family farm near Iona and attended St. Columba School. Bill worked for some farmers in the area for a few years until 1935, when he and his brother Aloy, began farming the Balster family farm. He retired from farming in 1985. Bill and his family, Frank, Bernard, Aloy and Josephine, played in several bands from 1930 to 1954. He was never married. Bill was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church all of his life. He enjoyed music, fishing and hunting, pool and baseball and liked to play cards. Bill lived at the Slayton Manor for one week before passing away there on December 21, 1987, at the age of 75.

Survivors include three brothers, Frank, Aloysius and Bernard, all of Iona, MN and three sisters, Mary, Mrs. Tom Clark of Dundee, MN, Josephine, Mrs. Bill Neuheisel of Herreid, SD, and Lucy, Mrs. Leon Thooft of Tyler, MN He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Henry, John and Norbert, and one sister, Anna, Mrs. Harold Schaffer.

Funeral services were at St. Columba Catholic Church in Iona, MN, on Wednesday, December 23, 1987 at 10:30am with Father Larry Brixius officiating. Organist was Sharon Lais. The lector and song leader was Agnes Herrig. Pallbearers were Mike Gaul, Rich Lanners, Lawrence Halbur, Dennis Klein, Frank Spartz and Ervin Kremer. Interment is in St. Columba Cemetery, Iona, MN
