Motion Picture Director. He was born in Boston, Massachussets. Of scottish parents, he began his screen career in England. He become one of the best directors of Ealing productions. He directed the classic films "Whisky Galore!" (1949), "The Man in the White Suit" (1951) and "The Ladykillers" (1955). In 1955 he left Britain for Hollywood. In 1957, he directed the film "Sweet Smell of Success." He also made a handful of films during the early sixties including "Sammy Going South" (1963), "A High Wind in Jamaica" (1965), and "Don't Make Waves" (1967). In 1969, he finally returned to the states where he was made dean of the film school of the California Institute of the Arts. He died of pneumonia in Los Angeles, California.
