Orville Leroy Oelschlaeger went home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 7:45am, one day before his 85th birthday. He was at home at his beloved farm in Tonganoxie, KS where he had resided since 1960.

His father was Daniel Oelschlaeger Jr., and his mother was Henrietta “Etta” (Scheller) Oelschlaeger.

He was born at home in a farmhouse in rural Tonganoxie on November 22, 1930 and went to Dafer School, one mile north of the homestead, through Grade 8, when he was required by his father to stay home to work on the farm.

He worked on the farm until joining the United States Marine Corps in February 1952. He did basic training at Camp Pendleton near San Diego California, and served as a Sherman Tank Driver.

He married Dorothy Jean Backstrom on (July 26th, 1953) and was deployed to Japan immediately following the wedding. When he returned, he was honorably discharged from the Marines on February 3, 1954 and settled with his wife in rural Tonganoxie. Son Mark Alan was born to them on July 23, 1955, and later they added another son Gary Scott on September 10th, 1958.

They purchased an 80 acre farm north of Tonganoxie in 1960, and welcomed a third son, John Wade on November 6, 1961.

Orville worked at Mid Continent Underground Storage for 40 years, finishing as a refrigerator engineer, as well as farming and shearing sheep for the North Eastern Kansas area.

Dorothy Oelschlaeger passed on October 14, 1985. Orville was re-married to Rosalie (Sawyer) Thomas on August 2, 1991.

Orville was a two time past Master of Henri Masonic Lodge (190) as well as a 32nd Degree Master Mason and Member of the Scottish Rite of Lawrence. He was awarded the KCCH. He was active in the Rinda Chapter of Eastern Star, as well as a past Guardian of Job’s Daughters.

As a member of Good Sam’s camping club, Orville and Rosalie served as Assistant District Directors for Kansas Good Sam’s.

He was an active member of Jarbalo United Methodist Church, and served in several leadership positions.

Orville was preceded in death by: his first wife Dorothy;an infant daughter, Mary Marie; his parents, Daniel Jr and Henrietta; sisters, Grace Oelschlaeger Clements; Helen Oelschlaeger Packard; brothers, Leo, Robert, Bernard, and Francis.

He is survived by; a sister, Annetta (Bob) Parsons; brothers, Richard (Helen Marie) and Everett. His sons; Mark Alan of Ottawa, Gary Scott of Tonganoxie, and John Wade (Janice) of Lawrence. Eleven grandchildren: Jessica (Dave) Karten, Billy (Joanie) Oelschlaeger, Kayla (Robin) Green, Brandi (Kendall) Dukes, Rachel (Zach) Ross, Erin Oelschlaeger, Amy Oelschlaeger, Sarah Oelschlaeger, Aidan Oelschlaeger, Grace Oelschlaeger, and Abigail Oelschlaeger. Four great grandkids and numerous nieces and nephews.
