Born in Vellage, Ostfriesland. Immigrated from Bremen to New York in 1850, probably on the ship Minna, arriving on 29 Nov 1850, with Elenore Borchers, although his name does not appear on the passenger manifest. He married Elenore three weeks later on 20 Dec 1850 in Stephenson County, Illinois.
Jan was a farmer in Silver Creek Township, Stephenson County, Illinois. His name was sometimes anglicized to John Greenwood on census forms.
He served as a Deacon between 1858 and 1862 at the Silver Creek Reformed Church, German Valley, Stephenson County, Illinois.
