She taught high school Home Economics and English at Bennett, Gillet Grove, Truesdale, and Cornell, all in Iowa. Arlene married Elmer Johannes Koenck on June 3, 1950 at the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer, where she was an active lifelong member. Following marriage Arlene and Elmer lived and farmed in the Spencer area. They moved to the Bernhagen family farm in March of 1963. Arlene was a homemaker, a skilled seamstress, a 4-H leader and a member of a camping club. She also taught Head Start in Spencer for a number of years.
She passed away at the Hawkeye Care Center in Milford, Iowa on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at the age of 89. Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer in 2006; a son-in-law, Peter Reparon; one granddaughter; one great-grandson and her brother, Ervin Bernhagen.
Left to cherish her memory are a son, Steven Koenck and his wife, Sue of Cedar Rapids, IA; two daughters: Lynnette and her husband, Vernon Carpenter of Boone, IA and Luanne Reparon of Dunsford, Ontario, Canada; a foster son, David Laubenthal and his wife, Patty of Spencer, IA; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
