Martha Simpson Kosak was born on a farm in rural North Carolina to Gale Zadok and Emily Livingston Simpson. She graduated from high school during World War II and wanted to do her part for the war effort by joining the Army Nurses Corp. In November 1945, she met Frank Kosak of Chicago who had returned home from the war a few months earlier. As fate would have it, Frank was involved in an automobile accident near Florence, S.C. and taken to the hospital where Martha worked in the E.R. They fell in love and married a mere 2 weeks later on December 5, 1945. They had 3 children together and were married for almost 30 years when Martha died from a brain tumor at the age of 48. Martha worked hard in her church, community, and as a PTA member and leader for the local schools. She loved sewing and gardening. Every year, she and her mother would plant a 1-acre vegetable garden and gave away as much as they kept.
