Lyle Howard “Cob” Zellmann age 82 of Young America died on Saturday December 12, 2015 at his residence.
Funeral service 11:00 AM Friday December 18, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church (101 SE 2nd Avenue) in Young America with Rev. David Winter and Rev. Eric Hutchison officiating. Interment in the Mau Memorial Cemetery in Young America with military honors accorded by the Young America VFW Post 1783. Visitation ALL AT THE CHURCH Thursday evening 4-8:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:30 PM and Friday one hour prior to the funeral service.
Lyle Howard “Cob” Zellmann was born April 13, 1933 in Young America the son of Hubert and Erna (Hensel) Zellmann. He was baptized on May 7, 1933 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Young America by Rev. M.F. Abraham. His sponsors were Louise Henning and Prosper Zellmann. Lyle was later confirmed in the faith on March 13, 1947 at St. John’s Lutheran Church by Rev. W.P. Kramer. Lyle was a graduate of the Central High School class of 1951.
On May 1, 1953 Lyle enlisted in the United States Army. During his service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and a Meritorious Unit Commendation. He received his Honorable Discharge on April 25, 1955 at Ft. Lewis, Washington where he then served in the Army Reserve.
On September 19, 1959 Lyle was united in marriage with Claudette (Gow) Stender at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Lyle had worked numerous jobs prior to purchasing the Standard Oil station in Young America in the early 1960’s. When he sold the business in 1990 Lyle took employment with the Central School District. Lyle enjoyed both playing and being a fan of baseball. He played for the Young America Cardinals for 25 years. He umpired baseball and had played softball for many years. He loved to play cards, listen to old time music, watch old western movies, driving his golf cart and giving those around him a hard time. Lyle was a member of the Young America VFW Post 1783 and had been a past member of the Young America Fire Department.
Lyle is preceded in death by his parents Hubert and Erna Zellmann; sister and brother-in-law Sylvia and Butch Heinbockel; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Loretta and Wilbur Schmidt, Lorraine and Raymond Dittmar.
Lyle is survived by his loving family: wife Claudette Zellmann of Young America; daughter and son-in-law Lynn and Jeff Debner of Young America; son and daughter-in-law Daniel and Jean Stender of Young America; grandchildren Aaron Stender (special friend: Becki Kohls) of Delano, Amber Stender of Young America, Angela (Dusty) Voges of Courtland, Kelsey (Anthony) Fratzke of Glencoe, Melissa Debner of Rochester; great grandchildren Izaya Stender, Kaleb Stender, Lucas Stender, Bennett Stender, Sonja Stender, Kinsley Voges; brother and sister-in-law Virgil and Kathy Zellmann of Young America; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
