One of Lake Rabun's earliest developer, he was the son of a prominent silk broker in Milan, Italy who came to America as a textile engineer around 1900. As a young man, he had met a widely traveled lady at his family's summer home on Lake Como who talked about the beauty of America's North Georgia Mountains. He vowed to someday see them, and he did, going first for a vacation at Tallulah Falls, Georgia. There, he met an enchanting young lady from Germany who was governess for the Annheuser-Bush family of St. Louis. She had been educated as a teacher, and then lived throughout Europe and the Orient as secretary to the wife of the German military attache' who became Army chief of staff. The two fell in love and they agreed to marry a year later. In the meantime, Andreae remained for a year in Tallulah Falls, exploring Rabun County and purchasing a farm near the Tallulah River for his bride. Andreae also acquired almost 500 acres, some along the Tallulah River, which he traded to the Georgia Railway and Power Company for future lakefront property of Lake Rabun. When his children were of school age, he bought a second home in Atlanta (since Rabun County schools met only three months of the year).
An ancestor, Jacob Andreae earned the family's coat-of-arms for assisting Martin Luther in the Reformation. His father Allessandro Andreae was for 16 years President of the Chamber of Commerce in Milan, Italy, established a Lutheran Hospital there, and was made a commander of the Royal Crown by Victor Emanuel. From his daughter's obituary.
