He served with the A.E.F. in France during World War I. Not long after his honorable discharge from the Army in 1921, Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a Carpenter's Mate, 1st Class, aboard several ships, including the USS Hannibal, USS Altair and USS Pittsburgh, during his Navy career. He retired in 1940, having served in the military for more than 20 years. He went on to work at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington.
Walter married Ruby Voge in 1931, and they had seven children: Ronald, twins Robin and Richard, Theodore, Virginia, Mary and Nellie. They later divorced.
In 1953, Walter married Lillian Shanks. After living on farms in Salem and Newberg in the Willamette Valley, the couple settled on a farm in Knappa, Oregon, with their children: Robert, Lorraine, Marleen, Janelle, Walter and Daniel.
Walter enjoyed tending to the farm animals as well as carpentry, and often got the whole family involved in various building projects around the farm. He also enjoyed reading in his spare time.
Walter passed away at the age of 88 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. His ashes were scattered at the family farm in Knappa.
His brother, mother, and step-father are buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California.
