Ruth Berndt, 103, of New Ulm, died Sunday, April 1, 2012 at the Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 3 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Rev. Donald Sutton officiating. Burial with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor will follow at the New Ulm City Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Schmucker Funeral Service of New Ulm is handling the arrangements.

Ruth Alice Berndt, the daughter of Julius Berndt, Jr. and Elise (Alice) Baumann Berndt, was born July 14, 1908 in New Ulm.

Ruth was the granddaughter of Mina (Kiesling) Berndt and Julius Berndt, Sr., the architect and builder of the Hermann Monument. Ruth's mother died in childbirth. At age 3, Ruth and her baby brother Albert were raised by their aging grandparents and Aunt Julia Berndt. Ruth attended Turner gymnastics and graduated from New Ulm High School.

In 1931, Ruth graduated from Ancker Hospital in St. Paul as an R.N. She worked as a private duty nurse until she enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in March 1942. During World War II, Ruth served in the Asiatic Pacific: Luzon, New Guinea, the Philippines and with the occupational army in Tokyo, Japan until her discharge in March 1946. After six months, she was recalled to active duty serving in the 49th General Hospital in Kyoto, Japan and various hospitals in the United States until 1948. Captain Berndt served as a Head of Obstetrics nurse in Heidelberg, Germany. She was honorably discharged after nearly 11 years of service. Captain Berndt received an Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, American Theater Campaign Medal, Victory Medal and Occupation Medals (Japan and Germany.) In 1953, Ruth returned to New Ulm and worked as a charge nurse at Union and Loretto Hospitals until her retirement.

Ruth is survived by second cousins Ruthie (Reuben) Stoll of New Ulm, Bill (Pat) Chambard of Orinda, CA, Lois (Bill) Godeke of Albert Lea; nieces and nephews; and special friends Wendy Enter, Barbara Forst, Carol Nestrud and Claudia Lewandowski.

Memorials are preferred to the Hermann Monument or to the donor's choice.
