Der Deutsche Correspondent, Baltimore; 10-2-1899 (from German): Prof. Daniel Feldmann, Sr., age 71, died yesterday evening shortly before 11 p.m., at his home at No. 517 West Barre Street, from diabetes, from which he had suffered for three months. In him the German community loses a veteran who lived during the Sturm und Drang period with so many other aspiring compatriots in America, who contributed his share in which German ways and German music made breakthroughs. On April 28th of this year, he and his faithful companion, Karoline, nee Rinke, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, surrounded by family and their great circle of friends. Prof. Feldmann was born March 29, 1828, in Arnsberg, Westphalia, and married there over 50 years ago to Miss Karoline Rinke. The young couple made their honeymoon trip to America, and landed at Fell's Point after a three month trip. Here Prof. Feldmann dedicated himself from the outset to his profession as a musician. What difficulties a young musician had at that time may be seen from the fact that Mr. Feldmann had to play as a musician in a local theater, where he played eight performances and before each performance an hour on the balcony, earning $ 4.50 per week. It did not take long before he earned much prestige, and later Mr. Feldmann enjoyed "good and fat years" in Baltimore. He spent several years as music director [or conductor] of the Maryland Guard, a highly regarded military organization, mostly consisting of aristocrats, before the war. In 1861 he left with his wife for their old home, but returned to Baltimore in 1870, where he remained until today.
The marriage produced ten children, of which only four survive, namely: Prof. Frank Feldmann, who plays in the music academy orchestra and was for many years president of the Musicians Union, of Baltimore; Mrs. Martha Elliott; Prof. Daniel Feldmann, Jr., a member of Ford's Theater Orchestra; and Mr. August Feldmann, who is employed in the business of the Hutzler brothers; also eight grandchildren.
