A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday afternoon at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church for Dr. Alfred Schuetz, 69, an internist who spent 32 years caring for the community as a member of the Boonslick Medical Group in St. Charles.

Dr. Schuetz "cared deeply for his patients as well as his family. He always put himself second," said his son, Dr. Alexander Schuetz of River Ridge, La. He "made housecalls when housecalls weren't done anymore," his son said.

Schuetz said his father "took care of a lot of people a lot of other physicians didn't want to take care of," and served as a physician for the Nuns of the Sacred Heart.

Whenever their father ran into one of his patients, Alexander said he and the other Schuetz children would notice "how happy and proud they were to see him. It would make us happy and proud of our Dad."

Dr. Schuetz was born in Aussig, Czechoslovakia. After completing his medical degree in Germany, he moved to St. Louis to do a residency at St. Louis County Hospital. He worked at Missouri State Hospital in Fulton before moving to St. Charles.

"He was an astute and dedicated physician," said Dr. Ranjit M. Bagwe of Boonslick Medical Group. "He was loved by his patients and his family, and he was a friend to his colleagues."

He died at his home in St. Charles on Monday.
