Madeline was born December 4, 1924 in Wynot NE she was the youngest of Edward and Matilda (Reifenrath) Backman's nine children.

Madeline grew up on the family farm and as the years passed saw her brothers go off to fight in World War II and her older sisters do what they could to help support the war effort here at home.

With this goal in mind Madeline made the move to Sioux City IA and began working for Knapp and Spencer Co; this is when she met, fell in love and in November of 1944 married Robert Paul John of Portland OR who was working as an airplane mechanic at the Sioux City Airbase.

After the war Madeline and her husband briefly lived in Portland OR but the attachment to her home and family drew them back to Sioux City IA.

Madeline and Robert worked a number of jobs until finally settling into a career as an automobile mechanic for Robert and a short order cook for Madeline.

Their children started to come along but Madeline still managed to find the time to sew clothing for her family despite working full time and enjoying a robust social life.

It was this love of sewing that Madeline truly pursued once she was able to retire from working and spent her time sewing beautiful quilts for all her children, grandchildren and was even able to still produce a few small quilts for her great-grandchildren.

Madeline also loved to embroider dishtowels as gifts for the new brides that have come into her family over the years.

Madeline lost her husband Robert on August 28, 1995 which caused her to slowly withdraw from life but her needle was seldom idle, she still made baby quilts for the St Luke's ICU and lap quilts to donate to various senior care facilities.

As her health started to fade she moved in with her daughter Judy until needing to move into Hallmark Care Center in 2015.

Madeline is survived by her 5 children; Edward (Mickie) John of Blairsville GA; Joan (Clarence) Mason of Sioux City IA; Judy Tagstrom (Martin Jones) of Sioux City IA; Jeannie (Timothy) Gormally of Sioux City IA; David (Jacquie) John of Versailles IN; Along with her 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Her parents, husband, 4 brothers, 4 sisters and an infant grandson Eric Mason preceded her in death.

Pallbearers are her sons and grandsons Edward John, David John, Tony John, Paul Mason, Chris Tagstrom and Mike Gormally.

Honorary Pallbearers are her daughters and granddaughters Joan Mason, Judy Tagstrom, Jeannie Gormally, Tracey Wenger, Regina Mason, Ashely Oregon, Martha John, Hannah John and her Grandson Marc Gormally.
