Gurine was born in Klepp, near Stavanger of Gabriel Torgersen Edland and Marta Maria Ole Johannesdatter Berland. She had 10 siblings. She emigrated alone to the United States in 1898, several years before her future husband. Initially she was in North Dakota, but she moved to Portland where she married George (Jørgen) in 1906. She remained there until she was murdered by her son, Howard, in 1937. Her other children were Theron, Ruby, Audey (sic) and Molly.
