WILLIAM WELLNER

Another one of the few remaining pioneers of this section of the state passed away last Saturday when Wm. Wellner succumbed to an attack of kidney trouble, aggravated by old age.

Up to within a very short time ago he was in the best of health, both physically and mentally, but within the past few months he has been subject to dizzy spells and on August 22 while outside he had a fainting spell and fell to the ground. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to his room. Altho he rallied from this shock, he gradually grew weaker until the end came.

The deceased was born November 8, in Schoenemark, Principality of Lippe Detmold, Germany, and emigrated to this country in 1857, coming directly to New Ulm, where he arrived in May of the same year. He immediately took a homestead in Nicollet County where he followed the occupation of farming until 24 years ago when he removed to New Ulm to spend his declining years in peace and comfort.

July 12, 1859 he was united in marriage to Wilhelmina Hellmann who preceded him in death October 16,1906. Five children were born to them, of whom two preceded him in death. The surviving children are: William Wellner of Mankato, Mrs. Jos. Schemann of Courtland Township and Mrs. Adolph Schilling of New Ulm. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Mr. Wellner has made several trips back to his old home in Detmold, once in 1908 and again in 1910. He was contemplating making another trip to Germany when the war broke out and frustrated his plans. He was a man of admirable qualities and was highly respected by his neighbors and friends.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock with services at his late home, Corner Front and Third N. Street, with services later at the Friedens Church, Rev. Geo. Mayer officiating. Interment was made in the City Cemetery.
