He was born in Wales, Nov. 25, 1838, and came to this country when a small child. A resident of Rock Island 50 years, he served in former years as assistant street commissioner. Mrs. Manuel preceded him in death in September, 1920.
Mr. Manuel was a veteran of the Civil war, a member of Co. B, 30th Wisconsin regiment, throughout the conflict. He was a member of John Buford post, G. A. R., and of Ucal lodge No. 608, Odd Fellows.
Surviving family includes four daughters, Mrs. Margaret Gribbie and Mrs. Susan Graham, Boise City, Idaho; Mrs. Annie Hammond and Miss Laura Manuel, St. Louis; three sons, Thomas Manuel, Butte, Mont., and Richard and Louis Manuel, Rock Island; four sisters, Mrs. Caroline Henderson, Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Martha Carroll of Stockton, Calif., Mrs. Lizzie Campbell, Cable, Ill., Mrs. Mary Laughery, Rock Island, and a brother, Joseph Manuel, Farmington, Ill.
In addition there are 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Mr. Manuel had been in failing health since he was struck by an automobile four years ago.
