While in St. Louis, Marietta met William Bernhardt Mertz. She wanted to marry him, but when she wrote her parents about her decision they were very much against that. They wanted her to come back to Germany and marry the man that they had picked out for her. Marietta did not return to Germany. Her father died in 1854 in Germany. The rest of her family came to the U.S. in 1855 & settled in Pennsylvania.
Marietta married Bernhardt Mertz in 1858 at which time her family disowned her. Bernhardt and Marietta had four children.
1. Alfred Mertz, 1859-abt. 1926
2. Marietta 'Mary Etta' Mertz, 1862-1939
3. Crawford Mertz, 1864-1945
4. Sherman Mertz, 1865-1955
In 1870 she resided in the Mount Pleasant Mental Health Institute in Mt. Pleasant, Center, Henry County, Iowa. After her release she did not return to her husband and died in 1871. Her death is thought to have been a suicide. It was a hard life then in a new land, losing the support of her family was very devastating.
