Journalist and motor racing driver. Born in Zell am See, Austria, Ertl began motor racing in the early 1970s racing in Formula V, Super Vee and F3, and then moved to the European Touring Car series. He won the 1973 Tourist Trophy with Derek Bell in a BMW. He managed to raise enough money to buy drives in F1 with Hesketh in 1975/1976 and Ensign in 1978 but always struggled to make the points. His best place was 7th in the 1976 British GP. After 28 grand prix he returned to touring cars with BMWs and Ford Capris. Regarded as a charming and popular man, he lost his life in a light aircraft crash near Giessen, Germany, as he was flying his wife and son (who were badly injured) to their holiday home on the Isle of Sylt.
