On 20 April 1848, Mathias married Amelia Koster in Büdesheim; he was age 31, she was 17. Born 22 November 1830 in Pleitzenhausen, Prussia, Amelia was the daughter of Johann & Maria Eva (Hellethal) Koster.

A successful farmer who's family farm was located three miles east of Saint Joseph, MN; Mathias served as a Town Supervisor of Saint Joseph, MN in 1877 & 1878. He died at age 71.
Cause of death was listed as dropsy, which is an old term for the swelling of soft tissues due to the accumulation of excess water. This was likely an indicator of congestive heart failure.
Mathias & Amelia are "co-founders" of our extended BRAUN family in USA & Canada.

NOTE: In 2014, members of the extended family took up a collection to replace the deteriorating marble grave marker with one similar to Amelia's. The old stone (shown) was then donated to the Stearns County Museum.
