Joseph Patt was born in July of 1820 in Prussia. His parents were Johann Joseph and Anna Marie Hesse Patt. Joseph married Elisabeth Eikelmann on November 20, 1845 in St. Jadokus Church in Elspe, Germany. Elizabeth was born around 1820 to Johannes and Maria Catharina Tigges Eikelmann. She died before 1878 in Oberelspe, Germany and is buried in Elspe, Germany.
Joseph, was affectionately known as Father by everyone who knew him, died at his home in the community of St. Mary's on May 3, 1903, at the age of eighty-two. He was orginally buried in St. Mary's Cemetery southeast of Loretto. Later, his remains and headstone were moved to the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Loretto and both the remains and tombstone were interred int he same grave as his daughter-in-law Regina.
