Marilyn Joyce Lilienthal was born December 17, 1933, in Cedar County, near Bennett, the daughter of Raymond and Evelyn (Hein) Lilienthal. She was an alumna of Durant Community High School, class of 1951, and proudly displayed her fervor for the "Blue and Gold" as a spirited basketball player and cheerleader. After graduation, she took a position as an investment banker and bookkeeper with White Phillips Investment Bank in Davenport. She married Dexter Lee DeWulf on September 4, 1954, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Long Grove. Together they farmed the family farm in Cedar County for 52 years. She had a knack for livestock and Dexter for field crops. They made formidable partners even when they didn't agree on what price to sell the fruits of their labors or when the peat bed was too boggy to be cultivated.

Marilyn was an enterprising, ambitious businesswoman, creating her own farm-to-table egg business that served the Davenport Diocese, the Blackhawk Hotel and the Kahl Home. When the farm crisis hit, she balanced farming with a demanding job at the Wilton Savings Bank, finally retiring from her position in the 1990's. She went on to apply her considerable accounting acumen at Willis Corroon and to adapt to new technology as a computer operator at SFS in Durant. She also was a community leader, serving as a Cedar County 4-H leader for more than two decades, as President of St. Mary's Altar and Rosary in Wilton, and on the garden committee of the Durant Lioness Club. She volunteered for countless school activities, including fundraising for new band uniforms and chaperoning the German club on a trip to the Lilienthal and Hein homeland in Germany.

While she pursued business and civic interests with characteristic high energy and high expectations, she always put her family first. As a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother, Marilyn was unsurpassed. She loved to host large family gatherings at the farmstead, putting out spreads of homemade dishes and desserts that were lovingly prepared and generously shared, accompanied with dancing, singing and music. Always ready to have company, she filled the family home with many, many good times and memories.

Surviving are her husband, Dexter; four daughters, Sheryl (George) Nehls, Karol (Donald) Nickell, LuRae DeWulf and Donna (Timothy) Wenthe; three granddaughters, Lauren Nickell and Kylie and Marilyn Crawford; one grandson, Alexander Nickell; one brother, Keith (Marge) Lilienthal; one sister, Patricia (William) Polzin; and other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
