The Rev. Owen Gehring, 76, retired priest in residence at St. Louis Catholic Church, Batesville, Ind., died Tuesday, June 29, 1993, at Margaret Mary Community Hospital, Batesville.

He was born March 1, 1917, in Oldenburg, Ind., the son of Joseph and Eleanora Haverkos Gehring. He graduated from Holy Family School, Oldenburg; from St. Francis Seminary, Cincinnati; from Duns Scotus College, Southfield, Mich., and earned a master's degree in education from the University of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff, Ariz.

Gehring invested in the Franciscan Order Aug. 15, 1935; was ordained to the priesthood March 3, 1944; and made his first profession Aug. 16, 1936, and his solemn profession Aug. 16, 1939.

He was assistant pastor 1944 to 1947 at St. Mary of the Angels, New Orleans, La.; teacher at Roger Bacon High School, Cincinnati, 1947 to 1954; St. Anthony Friary, Wichita, Kan., teacher at St. Mary's High, student at Wichita University, 1954 to 1955; assistant principal at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Gallup, N.M. 1955 to 1962, guardian of friary, 1961 to 1965, principal 1962 to 1968.

Also, St. Francis College, Fort Wayne, Ind., chaplain, teacher in philosophy and theology, 1968 to 1976; St. Boniface, Peoria, Ill., co-pastor, team ministry, 1976 to 1977; Sacred Heart, Calumet, Mich., assistant pastor, March to June, 1977; St. Joseph, Aztec, N.M., pastor, 1977 to 1990; and St. Louis Friary, Batesville, retired in 1990.

Survivors include two brothers, Myron Gehring, Batesville, and Dennis Gehring, Springfield, Ohio; one sister, Freda Thalheimer, Batesville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, the Rev. Irwin Gehring, OFM and the Rev. Dennis Gehring, OFM; and by one sister, Thecla Parker.

The Rev. John Bok, OFM, will conduct the mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Louis Catholic Church, Batesville.

Burial will be in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the St. Louis Catholic Church.

There will be a reception of the body at 4 p.m. Friday at the church.

Memorial contributions may go to the Father Herculon Kolinski Scholarship Fund, in care of the St. Louis Church.
