Erwin Rieger, a leader in the Vancouver-Portland journalism community for more than 50 years, died in his Vancouver home Tuesday. He was 89.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the First United Methodist Church, 401 E. 33rd St., Vancouver.
Mr. Rieger, whose health had been declining for nearly 10 years, was nominated this year for Washington State University's State Hall of Journalism Achievement. Announcement of the inductees is due April 23.
His career at The Columbian began in 1927, when he was hired as a reporter. He moved through the management ranks, becoming city editor, managing editor and associate editor. After his formal retirement in 1974, he continued coming to his office each week to write columns until about 1981.
For years he also served as scoutmaster to Boy Scout Troop 316, guiding thousands of boys.
Mr. Rieger was born Sept. 5, 1902, in the Yukon Territory of Canada. His mother was from Portland; his father was from Illinois. While their son was still an infant, the couple moved about 200 miles down the Yukon River to establish a ranch in Alaska. His experiences there, through his midteens, gave him material for countless newspaper stories and columns.
When his mother died, he was sent to Seattle, where he attended school and then the University of Washington. In 1926, while working a summer job on Mount Rainier, he climbed the peak alone. It was the first of many mountains for the man who later wrote a book titled ''Up Is the Mountain'' and who became president of the Mazamas mountain climbing organization.
His wife, Ruth Putnam Rieger, died in 1972.
His close friends -- there are no surviving relatives -- have suggested that remembrances be contributions to Boy Scout Troop 316 in care of the Vancouver Elks Lodge, 11605 S.E. McGillivray Blvd., Vancouver, Wash. 98684.
